    WILLIAMSPORT - High Steel Structures workers stood in the rain, cheered and applauded as they watched the final two "superload" girders for the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York leave the Williamsport plant.

     

    The massive blue girders, each 12 feet high, 120 feet long and weighing 78 tons, left the plant Tuesday morning with police escorts headed for the bridge project assembly yard in Coeymans, N.Y.

    Four East Lampeter Township fire companies practiced emergency rescues at the steel manufacturing plant Monday evening.

    High Steel Structures holds annual safety exercise so that its team and area first responders are ready for real emergencies, according to the company.

    As wooden glider planes catapulted toward the ceiling of the school gymnasium, pairs of model dragster cars powered by carbon dioxide canisters raced along a double track nearby.  

    Across the gym, just past the balsa wood bridge models, a robot platypus came to life — its eyes glowing and tail and jaw moving. Along the wall of the gym, a judge used a machine to test the weight-bearing properties of a couple dozen balsa-wood trusses.

    WINFIELD -- The first steel girders for the nearly mile-long bridge that will carry Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River are due on site this week.

    Erection of the girders, fabricated by High Steel Structures in Williamsport and Lancaster, is expected to begin late this week or early next, Jeremiah Gonzalo, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation bridge project engineer, said Monday.

    High Simulates Toxic Smoke in Confined-Space Rescue Operation for First Responders

    High Steel Structures LLC conducted a safety triage on Wednesday, October 3, at its Plant 3 property in Williamsport, Pa. The bridge fabrication firm worked with the Williamsport Bureau of Fire to simulate rescues of three people from a staged incident in a 69-foot-long box girder weighing 70 tons. First responders were not informed of the details of the 1 p.m. incident and treated it as an actual emergency.

    During a tour Thursday of a High Steel Structures plant in East Lampeter Township, Gov. Tom Wolf defined his plans to strengthen Pennsylvania’s workforce and highlighted the private company’s efforts toward educating the state’s labor pool.

    The state has added over 230,000 jobs in the past four years but needs to do more to get Pennsylvanians the skills to fill those jobs, Wolf said while on the tour.

    An air horn has just sounded a three-blast warning, and the 218-foot-long, 86-ton hunk of bridge steel slowly rotates toward Trevlin Bransom, who pulls on a work glove and walks to meet it.

    It’s about 10:30 on a recent evening. The illuminated Lincoln Memorial glows in the distance. And the “pick,” as such a heavy lift is called, is underway beneath the spotlights in the middle of Arlington Memorial Bridge.

    High Steel Structures LLC has donated nearly $100,000 worth of welding scrap to Pennsylvania College of Technology for instructional use in the college’s welding and metal fabrication programs.

    High Steel Structures has fabrication facilities in both Lancaster and Williamsport. The company is among North America’s largest fabricators of steel for bridge projects and regularly partners with “beam and column” fabricators outside the transportation industry.

    Confined Space Emergency Training Drill October 2022

    On October 17, 2022,  High Steel Structures’ Lancaster First Aid Team hosted volunteers from Lafayette Fire Company and Witmer Fire Protective Association for a confined space emergency training drill, staged with an arch rib box girder for a project that is currently in fabrication. The drill involved rescue scenarios using both live “victims” and mannequins.  High Steel holds multiple drills and triages during the year with the first aid team and various local EMS to train for life-threatening emergencies.
